The planets actually orbit around two points, one of which is the sun. The elliptic orbits are most noticeable with the outer gas giants. The inner planets are hard to discern the ellipse.

Actually the earth's shape is an oblate spheroid, it's more flatter at it's poles and bulging in the centre along the equator.

For instance I could use a sharpie a draw a circle on a piece of paper freehand and it's not perfectly equidistant but it is still a circle.
